Feb 18 | Golf - Corhampton Club - A further stage in the play
off for the final possession of the monthly medal was reached the end of
last week and in view of the hard state of the ground the golf was quite
up to the standard. Owing to an error E.H. Andrews(13) had to play off his
match again with H. Clark(18) but the result was not altered as the former
won the match by two up. In the second round A.G. Mack (scratch) won his
match against R. Clark(14), by three and two, a closer finish ought to have
been the order as they were all square at the 13th. After a very tight game
between Rev. E. P. Mack(4) and H.W. Clark(10) the latter won in a keen finish
by two and one. As R. Higgens and E. Andrews drew byes in the second round,
the semi-finalists are A.G. Mack, R.H. Higgens, E.H. Andrews and H.W. Clark,
the first and last two having been drawn together.
Note: Higgens, Clark and Andrews were also members of Droxford Cricket Club and A.G. Mack also played at Royal Winchester Golf Club as noted elsewhere in the same Hampshire Chronicle. |
Feb 25 | Golf - Corhampton Club - The semi-final for the possession of the monthly medal (season 1921) was played off the end of last week and two good games were fought out. A.G. Mack(scratch) was opposed to R.H. Higgins(13), the former winning a rather erratic game by 2 and 1; Higgins (whose driving was not up to his usual standard) was 4 down in as many holes, but managed by an excellent short game to keep the match going as stated. His opponent as may be expected gave very little away, and played his usual brilliant game. The other semi-finalists were H.W. Clark(10) and E.H. Andrews(13). As was expected a very keen fight ensued, the game being of a ding-dong nature up to the 12th, where it was all square. The interest was kept going to the 17th green when Clark won 3 and 1. This leaves A.G. Mack and H.W. Clark in the final, which should be played off in about a fortnight's time. |
Mar 4 | Golf - Corhampton Club - The monthly medal for February was played for on Wednesday week and the scores were much below the average, E.H. Andrews(13) and R. Clark(14) tied with a nett score of 82. E.P. Mack(4) and H.W.Clark(10) being runners up with 83 (nett). The three new greens which are being made so as to prevent crossing, are well on the way, and should be in good order by Easter, when it is proposed to open them. |
Mar 18 | Golf - Corhampton Club - E.H. Andrews(13) and R.Clark(14)
who tied for the monthly medal(stroke competition) have played off, the latter
being successful by six strokes. A.G. Mack(scratch) and H.W.Clark(10) played
off the final (match play) for the possession of the medal competed for during
1921. After an excellent tussle Clark won the match on the 20th green, after
being 3 down at the 14th.
Note: Baroness de Chassiron played for Shirrell Heath ladies against Royal Winchester Golf Club ladies. |
Apr 22 | Golf - Corhampton Club - Corhampton Downs presented quite a lively scene when the Easter Monday Competitions were due to start. Medal play under handicap was the order for the morning and on cards being checked, Mr H.W. Clark(10) with a nett score of 73 was found to have returned the best card and won the cup presented by the Club. Mr Tom Silvester(18) was the runner-up with a score of 79 nett which entitled him to the second prize (given by Mr Budd). Lunch was then partaken of. The afternoon competition consisted of Singles versus Bogey under handicap. Mr H Stubbs(11) returned a card of one down which proved to be the best one, and won the half dozen balls kindly given by the President of the Club (Mr Campbell-Wyndham-Long). The Rev. Mack(4) and Mr H.W. Clark(10) tied for second place with cards of 2 down and a play off will be arranged for the prize, which in this case was given by Mr Withers. The greens were in excellent order and it was very gratifying to see so many visitors from various parts of the county, and all seemed to enjoy what appeared to be an excellent day's golf. Thanks are due to the prize givers and especially to the Rev. Mack (Hon. Secretary) who took so much trouble in making the day a success. |
